COST (Cooperation in Science and Technology) is the oldest framework of scientific collaboration of European countries, established in 1971 at the first Conference of 19 ministers of science. The Republic of Croatia is full member of COST since 1992. The projects are funded at national level, but the results belong equally to all the project members. As a rule, the projects interesting for more countries or the projects of common European interest that help creating common European standard are considered for funding. The advantage of collaboration within COST is reflected in the fact that they create favourable conditions for all other forms of international collaboration, and national program is brought into relationship with European and world-wide research. COST is particularly oriented to the fields of investigation where common actions may bring benefit to member countries.

COST cordially promotes the bottom-up concept where each member country is allowed to start the action, which in turn may include several projects.

Nine key fields of interest are supported:

  • Biomedicine and Molecular Biosciences,
  • Food and Agriculture,
  • Forests, their Products and Services,
  • Materials, Physics and Nanosciences,
  • Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and Technologies,
  • Earth System Science and Environmental Management,
  • Information and Communication Technologies,
  • Transport and Urban Development,
  • Individuals, Societies, Cultures and Health.
